It’s no secret that I love this adopted city of mine. Any opportunity to share my favourite spots, or race to its defence when harsh words are said, and I’m there. You only have to read my viral post from summer 2020 to see what I mean.
In fact, I may be getting a bit of a reputation. Earlier this month I was asked by my colleagues to write a poem about our city for Valentine’s Day 2021 – a love letter to our south-coast city.
I scribbled down some thoughts and, within the hour, had a draft to be proud of.
The poem, which was shared on the University of Southampton’s social media channels, had a wonderful response. Over 22,000 people have viewed it on LinkedIn alone. I couldn’t be more delighted. Thank you to everyone who has shared the love!
You might even have heard it played on BBC Radio Solent on Katie Martin’s breakfast show on 14 February – you can listen to the broadcast on the UoS Media Twitter feed.
You can also watch the video my friend Anna created to accompany my words, paired with a voiceover provided by yours truly (!) below – or visit Instagram or LinkedIn.
I hope this poem offers an insight into why Southampton is so special to me. With our City of Culture 202 bid approaching, I’m more keen than ever to share my love of this place far and wide.
